From the Road Part 4 • 04/03/2010

It got pretty tense yesterday, with so much to be organised and things happening all over the place it can end up being quite fraught with organisation.  Plans change all the time through no-one‘s fault but it becomes hard to keep changing what you are meant to be doing and when.

So when Greg and I got on the bikes for the cycle last night it was actually very nice to clear my head and enjoy the peace and beauty of the open road. We went through the hills including one beast and then headed over the Severn Bridge. It was so exciting but the cold air off the water and the cross wind made it incredibly hard to keep control of the bike. Last night I felt so strong and positive that I knew I could knuckle down and really go for it. As we came off the Severn Bridge we were joined by eight cyclists who had waited to join us and each one took a turn to ride next to me and have a chat which was so encouraging.

I arrived at the coach to hand over to Fearne, and was so delighted with everything and buzzing that I stayed up and chatted for an hour to everyone as I was so full of adrenaline. After that I managed to get into my bunk and for the first night I got hold of some ear plugs and got a brilliant three hours sleep.

I woke up at about seven and immediately felt very homesick. I called into Radio 1 to chat to Moyles and he just asked how I was and I lost it! I had to rein it in and within a few minutes I was laughing and joking with them.

My last full ride was this morning at 11 with Richard and although it was hilly as always the weather had turned and it was amazing cycling conditions. Blue skies everywhere, Devon and Cornwall are just beautiful. I feel like I have a spring in my step and am really enjoying the cycling. So whilst we are travelling through the roads I hear a car honking its horn and someone shouting ‘Davina’ at the top of their voice. I look across and it was Matthew and a bunch of my friends in a car! I can tell you that it is really hard to cycle and blub at the same time.  Simply the best feeling ever, I had no idea he was coming and it was just a great moment. Suddenly there was more beeping and another car this time with all my children in it shouting ‘Mummy’. Suddenly I was a Tour De France cyclist going at 90mph to get back to the bus to give them a hug. I arrived and we all melted into each other’s arms.

I got back on to the coach and the mood here is excellent. Fearne motored through her session; I think she is pretty much a professional athlete now. Everyone has a new vigour and it feels like the end is near. For the first time we are awake, chatting and waiting for the final group ride to the end of the million pound challenge.

It is something none of us will ever forget, we all signed up to help Sport Relief raise the money and its profile, but we never expected to bond so much and become so close. A shared difficult experience brings people together and I feel like I have new friends, thighs like steel and a bottom like ball bearings!

All I can say is thank you Sport Relief and Great Britain for your endless warm support and encouragement I’ve loved every minute.

There is still time to sponsor so please please do ...

Davina
